"How Goodly Are Thy Tents, O Jacob...Wall paintings in Bukovinian Synagogues"

The exhibition was prepared by the Chernivtsi Museum of Bukovynian Jewish History and Culture within the framework of the project "Wall paintings in Bukovynian synagogues: rediscovering the old Jewish tradition", which had been realizing during the period of 2015-2016. The main goal of the project was to acquaint more people in Chernivtsi, in Ukraine and from abroad with the examples of the wall paintings in the synagogues, which are preserved in the historical region of Bukovyna. The museum with the help of this project tries to attract attention of those, on whom it depends, to take measures in order to save the wall paintings. In that, many of them or the buildings, where they are drawn, are in danger to be ruined.
The exhibition and the exhibition catalog with the same title were presented in Chernivtsi and Kharkiv in September - November 2016.

The catalogue presents the materials of a photographic exhibition dedicated to the wall paintings of eight synagogues located in the Northern (Ukrainian) and Southern (Romanian) Bukovinian region. The catalogue features analytical articles, historical reviews and recent photographs with descriptions and explanations, as well as graphic reconstructions.
They shape a holistic view of the eastern European tradition of synagogue wall painting and its regional peculiarities. An in-depth analysis of the iconography, semantics and artistic approaches to traditional motifs enables the reader to realise the profound spiritual content and social value of the cultural heritage of Eastern European Jewry largely lost during Holocaust and as a result of policies of the post-war authoritarian regimes.
